Hidden in the Russian countryside, located 15.5 miles east of Moscow, is Zvezdny Gorodok ("Star City"), once a highly classified facility so secretive, its existence was largely unknown to most of the Soviet military, let alone the rest of the world.

Built in 1960 behind thick walls, barbed-wire fences, and gun-toting guards, the Star City facility is the training site of every Russian cosmonaut to fly into space.

Star City is also the home of the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center, named after the world's first space traveler.

The Star City Planetarium

Today, Star City is an elaborate complex of training and office buildings. Russian and foreign cosmonauts all prepare for their missions at the facility. In addition, many retired cosmonauts call Star City and it's surrounding areas home. A lot of them teach the new cosmonauts.

To prepare for EVA's (extra-vehicular activity) cosmonauts in training put on spacesuits and get into Star City's massive Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory Basically a very large & deep pool). It is 39 feet deep.

Star City has the world's largest centrifuge which is used for training and G-force simulation. It has a 59 ft rotation radius and a weight of 653 lbs., which allows reaching accelerations of up to 30 Gs.

Star City also has a Soyuz spacecraft simulator which is used for training and honing the skills of the cosmonauts. It trains them for working in extraordinary situations, which can arise during, launch, flight, docking and landing activities. Today, Star City also is equipped with a space simulator of the Russian Segment of the International Space Station.
